Our Vision

Our community champions literacy and embraces lifelong learning.

Our Mission Statement

In Jasper, we provide diverse, accessible, and meaningful adult learning opportunities that benefit individuals and community.

Our Goals

1. Develop our capacity in human resources to serve our learners more effectively.

2. Develop strategies to respond to literacy barriers

3. Identify community lifelong learning needs and integrate results into program design and delivery.

Our Background

Adult Learning in Jasper was founded in 1974 and existed under the umbrella of the Jasper Improvement District (J.I.D.). It is funded by Community Programs, a department of Alberta Advanced Education & Technology. In 1996, the Adult Learning Council – Jasper Society was formed under the Societies Act while continuing to operate under the J.I.D. In June 2000, the Adult Learning Council became a legal entity unto its own and became known as the Jasper Adult Learning Council (J.A.L.C.). The J.A.L.C. is a stand-alone organization but does continue to receive support in various forms from the Municipality of Jasper.

What We Do

Adult Learning

By tapping into local resources as well as by bringing in professionals from out of the community, the Jasper Adult Learning Council provides a variety of opportunities for non-credit learning to the adult population of Jasper National Park. We hope to encourage lifelong learning in all Jasper residents.

Adult Literacy

We provide basic volunteer tutoring to adult Albertans wanting to improve their literacy skills for further education, employment preparation or personal reason. In addition, an English as a Second Language Program provides opportunities for community members to improve their conversational English language skills. Individualized and/or group study depends on the needs and wishes of the student. This is a volunteer tutor based instruction. Volunteer tutors are at the heart of Adult Literacy.

Career & Employment Services

We specialize in helping people find jobs and new careers. We also support employers in their efforts to hire, develop and re-train employees. All of our services are available in English and French and are free of charge. Services for Job Seekers include one-on-one career coaching, professional resume writing assistance, an up to date job board, student advice, training opportunities, access to computers, a fax machine, telephone and a resource area.
